Although credit bureaus are required to follow reasonable procedures to ensure that the late payment information they report is accurate, mistakes or errors can and will occur and may affect your credit score.
A late payment indicates how many days you are late from the payment due date. Late payments can range from 1-30 days past due, 60-90 days past due, 90-120 days past due, 120-150 days past due, and 150-180 days past due.
The credit bureaus are notified by your creditor when your payment is 30 days late. Since your payment history make approximately 35% of your credit score a late payment can significantly decrease your credit score, sometimes by up to 100 points! Typically, a late mortgage payment will have the most negative impact on your credit score. Late payments can also cause your interest rates to be increased and your creditor may also charge a late fee.
Once a late payment is reported to the credit bureau, it could remain on your credit report for 7 years and a late payment will make future applications for credit more difficult to obtain. This information is used by lenders such as credit card companies to determine an individual's credit worthiness that is determining an individual's willingness to repay a debt. The willingness to repay a debt is indicated by how timely past payments have been made to other lenders. Lenders like to see consumer debt obligations paid on a monthly basis.

As noted in the Fair Credit Reporting Act, late payments should automatically be removed from your credit report by each credit bureau 7 years from the date the late payment was made.
